Thank You for Being Here

The best part of my job at Madison+Main is getting to do something fun every single day. Yes, there’s a lot of work, deadlines, and spreadsheets — and I really hate spreadsheets — but each and every day I get the freedom to do something creative.
The second best thing about my work is that I can do my job from anywhere, as long as I have a phone, a laptop, and reliable Internet connection. After all, I spent most of COVID on a boat and no one missed me.
For the past six weeks I have been working at 2901 Park Ave., 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. most days, at the Richmond location of the Texas Inn. Dressed in khakis and a black Texas Inn T-shirt, I can lift a box of bacon off the truck, put it in the fridge, and then jump on a Zoom call in less than three minutes.
That means I’ve been working there (or mostly there) for more than a month and a half without a day off, but I’m still having fun. I greet customers. I shake their hands and welcome them. I answer their questions and tell them the long history of the place. Heck I’ve even cooked a few Cheesy Westerns and made ice cream floats when we were understaffed and overwhelmed (the Richmond Times-Dispatch put us on the front page.)
The long days and hard work have been worth it though. At least half of the people I’ve met — neighbors, new customers, and Lynchburg natives — have told me “thank you for being here.” I expected them to say things like “welcome” and “good luck,” but people are generally happy and appreciative that we brought this little piece of Virginia history to the Museum District.
“Oh wow, all day breakfast? Thank you for being here.”
“We needed something like this in Richmond. Thank you for being here.”
“I haven’t had a Cheesy and a Bowl in 30 years. Thank you for being here.”
And that’s why I focus more on the smiles than my own tired feet and lower back pain. The Texas Inn is now open in the Capital City. Thank YOU for being here.
MONDAY:
LOOK MA, WE WON AN AWARD!
Last Friday, the Richmond Ad Club hosted the 63rd Annual Richmond Show, and while we hate to brag, we had a couple big wins! Our own Communications Director, Kent Brockwell, was named Ad Person of the Year! We’re so proud to see his creativity and contributions honored — congratulations, Mr. Brockwell!
Patrick Simkins, our brilliant Creative Consultant, also took home two awards – a gold for brand design for his Simkins Lightbulb Company and a silver for social media design! We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — #BoldBrandsWin!

TUESDAY:
PRESS CALL
Tuesday our Accounts Director Allison Nida drove out to Danville to be present for a press conference and lunch event with the Office of the Attorney General amid the continued rollout of the Ceasefire Virginia initiative. We’re proud to partner with them to see this campaign making meaningful change and evolving as we hear community feedback and see results.

WEDNESDAY:
VOLUNTEER VP!
Madison+Main-iacs were on the move this week! VP Leanne Pillow volunteered with Richmond-based program CARITAS — they’re an incredible team who step up to help those rebuilding lives after homelessness or addiction, and prepare them to reenter the workforce. She helped individuals prep for interviews in the real world and came back excited about continuing to partner with them. We encourage you to look into their mission and see how you, too, can help and enrich lives! Check out their testimonial wall below – it’s just a piece of a beautiful record of how many lives have been changed.

THURSDAY:
BACK TO SCHOOL
Accounts Director Allison returned to her alma mater Varina High School to visit with seniors at the Center for Communications and Media Studies, which she also was a part of when she was a student at Varina. When connecting with the students, she helped lay out what it’s like having a career at an agency, skills for a prosperous career, and insight on today’s marketing and the media landscape evolution over time!

FRIDAY:
JUMP FOR JOY JENNA!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We know we’re a little early — her birthday is Sunday — but it’s so easy to celebrate our very own Jenna! When she’s not attending a comic convention in perfect cosplay or feeding her neighborhood cats, Jenna is one of the pillars of our graphic design team. Her creativity and work ethic are pretty much legend around the office.
