Blocking and Tackling
In business we use waaaayyy too many sports metaphors — “Keep your eye on the ball.” “We’re in the homestretch.” “Go for the hat trick.” Since football is over until Fall, I’m going to “take one for the team” and write about one sports metaphor that I actually find useful in business. I hope I don’t “drop the ball.”
Every once in a while, it’s a good idea to go back to basics with your team. Regardless of tenure, the fundamental things people need to do to be successful need to be conveyed in a very simple way. I have people that I’ve worked with for 10 years and 10 weeks. It doesn’t matter though because both need a reminder about “blocking and tackling.”
There are two fundamental things you need to learn as a football player — blocking and tackling. (I know this because I was a highly successful pee wee football coach for the Alberta Smith Sharks.) Blocking is about offense. Tackling is about defense. These fundamental things have to be understood, practiced, and done consistently before you draw up a complicated play.
On any given Sunday you’ll see professional athletes, who are paid millions of dollars, miss a block or tackle. Sometimes that one mistake ends up costing their team the victory.
Think about it over the weekend. What are the two or three basic things your people need to do to be successful? Define them. Share them. Practice them. Remind them. Then watch them execute. If they get it, huddle them together and tell them “great job.” If they don’t, have them sit down in the locker room (conference room) and write them up on a board. This reminds the veterans of what they need to do and it helps the rookies know the playbook.
Business can be complicated. Winning at business shouldn’t be, if your team knows the basics.
MONDAY:
YOU’VE GOT MAIL!
I got a note the other day from one of team members in Lynchburg. She said “you’ve got mail” and texted me a picture of a very official looking letter from U.S. Senator Mark Warner. The honorable gentleman from Virginia congratulated me on winning Restaurateur of the Year, from the Virginia Restaurant, Travel & Lodging Association (VRTLA). His colleague in the senate Tim Kaine didn’t send a letter, but I think he’s been working on getting USPS to do its job better — I won the award in October. The letter arrived five months later in March.
TUESDAY:
WORKING LUNCH
Madison+Main VP Leanne Pillow and I joined Sean Dewitt of Dewitt Studios in Carytown to discuss possible upcoming collaborations. One of the best parts of working in our own river city is the partnerships we have with talented folks nearby. Keep an eye out for projects coming down the pipeline.
WEDNESDAY:
POP UP – PUSH PLAY!
We’re so excited to share that the recent commercial we helped create with our friends at Broadscope Media for North Carolina’s favorite local pharmacy, Realo Drugs, is now on TV across eastern N.C.! We’re helping spread the word about how Realo can make life easier, simpler, and healthier for their customers across the state. Take a look at the commercial, here!
THURSDAY:
POINTED PERSPECTIVE
Many of Madison+Main’s best and brightest spent Thursday filming various participants for a testimonial video, which will serve as part of a broader documentary that is in the works for Ceasefire Virginia. This video highlights diverse perspectives on gun violence, as we work to capture and relate the raw stories of those affected by it, to help our communities stay safer through awareness and healing.
FRIDAY:
TUNE IN!
As we head into the weekend, I headed back to WRVA to offer my recommendations for what to do this weekend in Richmond.
St. Patrick’s Day is coming right up on Sunday, so get into the spirit and go green at Shamrock the Block, or enjoy the Church Hill Irish Festival. Check out the segment here, stay safe as you celebrate, and Sláinte!

“Football is two things. It’s blocking and tackling. I don’t care about formations or new offenses or tricks on defense. You block and tackle better than the team you’re playing, you win.“ — Vince Lombardi
