Dear Internet

Dear Internet,
I have grown up alongside you. We both have changed from simple youngsters to mature, yet complicated adults. You were born in 1969. I was born in 1967. We first met in Mr. Hobb’s 8th grade computer class. My dad subscribed to AOL and we brought you into our home.
I have gotten to know you quite well, and you have gotten to know me.
For a long time, it was a symbiotic friendship. I needed you and you needed me. For many years, I have to admit you’ve known me too well. You know where I live and all of my friends. You know my credit card info and shopping habits. You know my likes, dislikes, hobbies, and even who I voted for.
Yet, I feel as if I’m starting to understand you less and less. Your information is not as reliable as it once was, and I don’t know how to tell you this, but the wires in your system keep getting crossed. You show me things that are flat out wrong…and weird.
Today for example, you are serving me ads I have no interest in. For example, I own restaurants, not a hotel, but you keep showing me ads from Travelocity to advertise my “rooms for rent.” My beagle Gertie died almost two years ago, yet I still see Chewy promos every time I log in. If I Google myself, you have me confused with MSNBC’s Dave “Mudcat” Saunders.
Frankly Internet, I don’t know when you’re telling me the truth and I even suspect you are invading my privacy. Things of gotten so bad that democracies around the world have banded together to help get you back on track.
Even though I value the relationship we’ve had in the past, I’m going to be watching you in the future. It goes without saying, you’ll be watching me. Maybe you could just back off a little bit?
Sincerely,
Dave
