Clear is Kind. Unclear is Unkind.
The English language is one of the hardest to learn, even for people who speak it. There are thousands of words that have multiple meanings. There are words that sound the same, yet have different uses, for example, there, their, and they’re. There are more grammatical rules for English than any other language, except maybe Latin. (I took five years of Latin, so that last statement is possibillis but not fact-checked).
English is also difficult due to the complexities of changing definitions over time, meaning that a word you used 30 years ago may have a different meaning today. Take the word “bad” for example. It means different things at different times. Sometimes it actually means bad. Sometimes it means good. The other day I heard a guy say “she bad” and I don’t think he was talking about the woman’s behavior.
One of my favorite expressions is “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” Although I’m often misunderstood and mistaken, I’ve tried to be clear with colleagues, friends and family. But the nuances of the English language, technology and my manifold and multifarious vocabulary often make it difficult to do so.
Take texting for example. Even in this simple messaging system, words can be misconstrued. We use code to convey feelings and actions. Did that person really “lol” at my text? And what does TLDR mean? (Too Long; Didn’t Read)
And I fear that “biz speak” makes true, meaningful communication almost impossible. Resumes and proposals and ads and social media posts these days are full of BS (biz speak).
If you read a resume and the writer describes themselves as “a dynamic, quality-focused, results-driven team player who thrives working with cross-functional dynamic organizations who shift the paradigm”, would you hire them?
Or would you “throw them under the bus because they sound like an empty suit that will drop the ball because they can’t get traction when they run an ideation product up the flagpole?” After tackling that bag of word garbage I would simply throw the resume “over the wall like a poorly crafted one-pager that didn’t resonate and missed the mark.” In other words, I’d toss the resume in the circular file.
“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” Heed my advice and make your texts, emails, conversations, proposals, pitches, and marketing communications more clear and less complicated. Without clarity, it’s all just BS.
MONDAY:
FUTURE GOALS AT FORT MONROE
On Monday, we met with our clients at Fort Monroe in Hampton to discuss their goals for the upcoming year. Fort Monroe -— nicknamed “Freedom’s Fortress” for its history as a safe haven for enslaved people after they were freed — continues to offer educational programs and curated collections. Take a chance to #ExperienceTheFort in its beautiful setting on the Chesapeake Bay.
TUESDAY:
PAW-LIDAY READY!
Tuesday, Accounts Director Allison Nida and Account Manager Amanda Anderson headed to see our clients at Holiday Barn Pet Resorts to kickstart the planning for a banner 2024! They’re currently preparing their holiday Pop-Up Pet Food Pantry — and this is a perfect place to help out the four-legged friends and neighbors in your community. (We don’t judge if they don’t have four legs, either!) Learn how you can get involved and help provide for pets in need of a little extra Holiday cheer.
WEDNESDAY:
A CHECK-UP AT LUCY CORR
A few of our team members got on the road today to visit our clients at Lucy Corr and get some photos to use as we plan their social media. The Lucy Corr Free Dental Clinic, supported by the Lucy Corr Foundation, provides low-cost dental care to uninsured and under-insured seniors in the community, bringing brighter smiles and ensuring healthier lives!
THURSDAY:
AMANDA ANDERSON, ACCOUNT MANAGER!
While she’s been on the road a lot this week working with clients to develop marketing plans for the new year, we don’t want to miss the chance to make an exciting announcement – Madison+Main is celebrating Amanda Anderson’s promotion to Account Manager! Her consistent energy and positivity always show as she takes on new challenges and new clients, and this is so well deserved! Congratulations, Amanda!
FRIDAY:
IT’S DECEMBER ALREADY?!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at all three Texas Inn locations, thanks to staff who have gone all out this holiday season. The windows are decorated and the stores are stocked with merchandise. Looking for a great gift or stocking stuffer? Then I would direct you to one of our famous Christmas ornaments , a famous Miss Debbie T-Shirt, or a gift card…you can’t go wrong with a gift card.
A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE EVENTS
Chewning + Wilmer Toy Drive
Holiday Toy Drive Benefitting the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU
Amazon Wishlist | Wal-Mart Wishlist
In 2022, Chewning + Wilmer was overwhelmed by the support we received from our employees, customers and vendors towards this great cause. These toys are distributed by hospital staff throughout the year to children receiving care in the facility. For 2023, you can get involved with this great cause too!
If you would like to help, we ask that you follow the links below to the wish list items, and have your toy shipped to the address listed. The Hospital cannot accept used toys – for ease of your shopping, click the links on the left to view the “wish lists” on Amazon and Walmart.
C&W will collect the toys and deliver them to the Hospital on December 20, 2023. Thank you for your help!
