“I’d Like To Thank The Academy…”
Award shows are not really my thing. I don’t watch the Oscars, Emmys, or GRAMMYs anymore. However, I do watch the Golden Globes, but only when hosted by Ricky Gervais. He turns the show into a roast of the audience. “I’d like to thank the academy…five, six, seven, eight…” #cuethemusic #eyeroll #sithereandsmile
I have joked that I am the “Susan Lucci” of local award shows. I’ve been nominated for dozens of awards through the years – but lost numerous times. I was a finalist in so many Chamber of Commerce awards and various other ad biz awards that it became a running joke. I’d spend time writing a perfectly perky, playful, and pithy acceptance speech…and then lose. The speech I worked on would never get delivered, usually ending up crushed into a ball and deposited in a lobby waste basket at the end of the night. So since I’m always “a bridesmaid and never a bride,” I stopped writing acceptance speeches.
Then came Tuesday night. I wandered into the Richmond Marriott, surrounded by hospitality industry professionals, who were very hospitable. I’m an ad guy, but here I was in the middle of hotel, restaurant, and travel professionals at their annual Ordinary Awards, presented by the VRLTA (Va Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association.)
I’m kinda new to all this…having only been in the hospitality “biz” for five years – since buying the Texas Inn locations. I was nominated for Restaurateur Of The Year. A great honor. I didn’t write a speech, because I didn’t think I’d win…
Surprise. I actually won. Special thanks to my good friend and colleague Kent Brockwell for nominating me and to the VRLTA for this awesome recognition.
Instead of a speech, I told a story about why the Texas Inn has meant so much to me over the years.
MONDAY:
MOMENTOUS MONDAY
It was a momentous Monday at Madison+Main. Over the weekend we celebrated word nerd and beautifully bearded Communications Director Kent Brockwell’s 39th birthday, and the work-a-versaries of Account Director Allison Nida and Senior Copywriter Derek Fair! These three are pivotal to the day-to-day marketing magic that gets made. Time to whoop it up!
TUESDAY:
LUCY CORR DAY!
Tuesday was Lucy Corr’s birthday – and it was a celebration of a remarkable woman and the healthcare community that bears her name! Opened in 1970 as the Chesterfield County Nursing Home, today’s Lucy Corr has developed into a senior care facility offering a vibrant life to residents and meaningful programming to citizens of the Chesterfield area. This invaluable asset would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of its founder, who was affectionately known as “Miss Lucy.”
WEDNESDAY:
HAPPY 88TH BIRTHDAY!
On Wednesday, I didn’t have much time to bask in the glory of my Restaurateur Of The Year Award, because I had to drive down to both Lynchburg and Harrisonburg to help the crew celebrate the 88th birthday of the Texas Inn. We got some great media coverage and were able to serve almost 5,000 hot dogs. Hot diggity dog!
THURSDAY:
NATIONAL FARMER’S DAY!
Thursday was National Farmer’s Day! We’re proud to have Maola Local Dairies as a client each day, not just on their national day. More than 900 Maola farmers work hard to bring you the delicious Maola products on your store shelves, and they’ve been at it for over 100 years. They’re consistently working to create a more sustainable model and are headed toward total carbon neutrality, all while bringing the best dairy products on the market to us – and you!
FRIDAY:
RAD ON THE RADIO
It may be Friday, the 13th, but don’t let that stop you from going out and about this weekend. I jumped on Newsradio WRVA this morning for my semi-regular RVA Event Update, with John Reid of Richmond’s Morning News. Highlights this weekend included Disney’s Broadway Musical “Frozen“ at the Altria Theater and the 19th Annual Richmond Folk Festival.
