Everything Old Is New Again
Greetings from the milepost 41.4 on the Garden State Parkway, where I write this week’s edition of the Weekly Report. I’m sipping a Starbucks at the Frank Sinatra Service Center. You just never know where inspiration for this newsletter/blog comes from.
I’m “tan, ready, and rested” to tackle another week, after spending the majority of this week lakeside on Saratoga Lake and trackside at Saratoga Race Course. The lake was formed 13,500 years ago, but the track is a mere 159 years old. In both cases, the old adage rings true — everything old is new again.
I’ve lived long enough to recognize “macro trends.” Nostalgia as a theme permeates almost every industry and cultural norm. It’s a powerful brand driver, because it connects people with the past and creates an emotional attachment to — based on memories of a better time in their lives — their youth.
As I look around I can see that bell bottom pants and mullets are making a comeback. Every restaurant now serves “small plates” and every burger joint is touting their “smashburger” and places tout their new “all-day breakfast menu.” Ironically, my old school diners may be trendy once again. The Texas Inn always had small plates. We cook burgers by smashing them on a grill and we’ve served all-day (and all-night) breakfast for 87 years – 30 years before McDonalds was founded.
If you wait long enough eventually a popular trend — in culture, fashion, the arts or hospitality — will return. Glad I kept my Crocs from 2003. They’re trendy again.
QOTW: 1) What trend would you like to see again? 2) What trend should die off? Let me know via email!
MONDAY:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LAURA!
A little birdie told me that Digital Marketing Manager Laura Hunt celebrated a birthday over the weekend. I wasn’t around to celebrate it with her but I hear she took some time off from crafting guru-level PPC and media strategy to enjoy a little cake, rest, and relaxation! HBD, Laura!
TUESDAY:
HIGH QUALITY NEWS
I’d like to extend a hearty congratulations to our client Birmingham Green in Manassas, Virginia. Last week we learned that Birmingham Green’s District Home Assisted Living and Health Center recently were honored with the prestigious 2023 Silver National Quality Award from AHCA/NCAL for their commitment to delivering exceptional care and fostering an environment of compassion and excellence. This is a pretty big deal in the senior health care industry and very well deserved by our NOVA friends! Congrats!
WEDNESDAY:
PONY UP THE DOUGH
While the Madison+Main-iacs were hard at work, I spent most of the day at the famed Saratoga Race Course, including eating a breakfast “hard roll” (which isn’t hard BTW), taking a tour of the stables and backstretch and made a few bets on the ponies. This beautiful sporting event venue was founded August 2, 1863, and I got to cross another item off my bucket list. I actually won a few races, but missed seeing Dave Portnoy from Barstool Sports by about 30 seconds.
THURSDAY:
LIGHTS, CAMERA, CCPD!
On Thursday, a gaggle of Main-iacs headed south for a full day photoshoot and content gathering session with the extremely photogenic officers of the Chesterfield County Police Department. It was a hot day under the lights (and the sun) but we were happy to help the CCPD build their library of images and videos for all sorts of fun upcoming projects. Great job Allison Nida (featured below), Jenna Farley, and Carissa Ghaffari, as well as Kent Brockwell for not ending up in handcuffs…again. J/K!
FRIDAY:
