Add Merch To Your Brand Strategy

“Merch” is short for merchandise. That’s what the cool kids call it.
When I first bought the Texas Inn in 2018, I asked a lot of questions. “Where are the T-shirts and the coffee mugs?” was one of the first questions. The answer was blank stares and shoulder shrugs. No one had ordered any merchandise in seven years.
I’d been a Texas Inn fan since I was a child and had bought a coffee mug and a T-shirt in my 20s. At 50, I had the opportunity to buy the old place, and I still had my branded merch. The coffee mug logo was faded and the T-shirt was thin and had several holes in it. My new customers didn’t have the option to buy merchandise; something I solved almost immediately. I ordered stuff with the Texas Inn logo and created a merchandise strategy that has added to the bottom line and created thousands of Brand Champs. Wear your Texas Inn Merch on Monday? Get a 20% discount. Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales? Check and check.
Lots of Physical Evidence* brands rely on branded merchandise as part of their brand and marketing strategies. Buc-ee’s is a Physical Evidence Brand; 120 gas pumps, big beef brisket sandwiches, and super clean restrooms. I stop at a Buc-ee’s on every trip. I’m a fan, so I bought some Buc-ee’s branded socks. It’s like the socks have magical powers…they make me spend more than I was planning. I love my Jeep, and I have several Jeep T-shirts. I’m a fan of Brew Thru, too. In fact, I blogged about it.
Using merch as a branding strategy transforms passive consumers into active advocates. By creating wearable and usable products, brands extend their physical footprint in daily life, generate continuous organic advertising, and build long-term loyalty. A coffee mug can last forever. So can a favorite T-shirt.
And if you still don’t believe me, think about the world’s #1 Brand, Coca-Cola. Coke has put its logo on literally everything over the past 100+ years. You can even buy Coke-style Adidas for the World Cup.
But not every brand can just slap a logo on something and wait for the magic. You have to give them stuff they want to buy…and a reason to buy it…and create a brand worth following. I mean, after all, the T-shirts you made for XYZ, LLC are not gonna fly off the shelves. No offense.
So how do you create a brand that’s so awesome that people buy your branded merch? You can start by calling Madison+Main or emailing me here if you want a paper on the “Three Kinds of Brand,” including a definition of a Physical Evidence Brand. #BoldBrandsWin

MONDAY:
IRL ENERGY
The office had a little extra buzz this week as we welcomed our President and Chief Operating Officer, Molly Whitfield, to Richmond all the way from Austin. As much as we all rely on Zoom and the occasional “Can you hear me now?” moment, there’s still no substitute for being in the same room. From impromptu convos in the hallway to lunch at the Urban Farmhouse Market and Cafe and catching up face-to-face, it was proof that some things just work better in person…and we’re already looking forward to her next visit.

TUESDAY:
HAPPY WORKIVERSARY
On Tuesday, we celebrated Graphic Designer Elizabeth Newport and her one-year anniversary at Madison+Main. For the past 365 days, she’s been making logos cleaner, layouts stronger, and the rest of us wonder how she makes it look so easy. It’s been a great first year, and we’re looking forward to many, many more. Cheers to one year, Elizabeth!

WEDNESDAY:
TIME WELL SPENT
On Wednesday, I met with my fellow CEOs of the Virginia Council of CEOs (a.k.a. VACEOS). Each month, my Roundtable, ten of us, meet to explore challenges within our lives and businesses. We had a great meeting, and it’s the most valuable time I spend each month working on my businesses. If you’ve read the Weekly Report before, you’ll know that I’m keen on the organization. I’ve been a member for almost 14 years. If you’re a CEO or business owner, call me and I’ll explain more or just join by following this link. You’ll thank me later.
THURSDAY:
PAWSPORT TO PARADISE
Summer officially arrives this weekend, although the recent stretch of 90-degree days suggests the calendar is a little late to the party. To make a splash, our friends at Holiday Barn Pet Resorts are giving dogs their own taste of summer with a beach-themed spa package that includes a seabreeze shampoo, tropical cologne, and a cookie (Mmm). I don’t know much about dog grooming, but I do know that anything that makes a dog smell less like wet dog and more like a beach vacation can’t be a bad thing.

Colorectal cancer is now the #1 cause of cancer-related death in people under age 50. Young community members are at risk. Every event offers the opportunity to bring education to the participants and the community, which can save lives. This golf fundraiser at the Magnolia Green Golf Club includes a long drive contest, a closest to the pin contest, a putting contest, and a bountiful prize package for anyone fortunate enough to make a hole-in-one. Hitting Cancer Below the Belt will also offer a number of other optional fun activities for those who like to take a risk. A box lunch will be served prior to the event, and there will be a sit-down dinner following the event as they present awards.
