Open for Business

In the fast-paced world of marketing, we often focus on the big-ticket items: TV and digital ads, PR campaigns, and that fancy new website redesign. But sometimes, the simplest tools are the most effective way to draw in a customer.
Case in point: the humble “Open” sign.
When we opened a Texas Inn in Richmond last year, I thought I dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s. But after a complete assessment of the marketing, I realized I’d forgotten a basic, yet important detail.
I’m talking about that glowing beacon in the window that confidently tells the world, “Come on in!” So I ordered the biggest, brightest, reddest LED I could find (before tariffs kicked in) and it just arrived after a long, slow boat ride from China.
To you, it may seem obvious, and it is obvious, and obviously I missed it. An Open sign does more than just state the obvious — it invites. It reassures. It reminds customers that your business is ready to serve.
Let’s face it: people are busy, distracted, and bombarded by choices. If your storefront looks closed, or even just ambiguous, many potential customers will simply keep walking or driving. That sign isn’t just a piece of plastic or glass — it’s the first handshake, the first smile, the first impression.
An Open sign signals consistency and reliability. Rain or shine, weekday or weekend, it’s your silent sales rep working day and night. It tells the community that you’re part of the neighborhood fabric — that you’re here, and you care.
At Madison+Main, we often remind clients that great marketing starts with clear communication. Before you embark on a new marketing plan, ask yourself: Do you have an OPEN Sign? Is it visible, welcoming, and on whenever you are open?
Sometimes, the most effective way to attract customers is as easy as flipping a switch.

TUESDAY:
UNOFFICIAL BRING YOUR SON TO WORK DAY
One of the things we love about Team Tuesdays is how flexible they are. This Team Tuesday, we were graced with the presence of Account Manager Amanda Anderson’s fur-son, Huck, and Creative Director Carissa Ghaffari’s human-son, Donovan. Both contributed greatly to team morale and impressed us with their collaboration skills.

WEDNESDAY:
HIDING TEARS BEHIND SUNGLASSES
Born with Phocomelia, Jason “NUBZ” Hasty is on a mission to make golf more accessible for all. On Wednesday, he visited our friends over at Lucy Corr to teach golf lessons to the residents. Account Manager Amanda Anderson said she was holding back tears the entire day because of how heartwarming the experience was.

THURSDAY:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KENDALL
RECOGNIZING JUNETEENTH
On Thursday, we celebrated Account Executive Kendall Sanders’ birthday! This detail-oriented mama-to-be keeps our clients on track, and our team gassed up no matter how big the project. You KNOW she’ll be the first to celebrate with a team-wide high five and call out the littlest successes for her coworkers. Hope you had an awesome day, Kendall!
We also acknowledge and honor Juneteenth, this important day when the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a powerful reminder that freedom in this country has never been evenly or easily granted, and that progress takes time, persistence, and people who care enough to keep fighting for it.
