Take A Hike

Although Winter doesn’t officially make its exit until Thursday, March 20th, there are many reasons to ignore it. The weather turned this last week — hopefully for good — and temps reached into the 60s, making it feel a bit like Spring.
Richmonders have really taken it on the chin this season. February was one of the wettest on record, with more than five inches of rain and snow falling on the Capital City (which normally sees 3 or less). Ironically, in January, we didn’t get enough water — at least from our taps — as we lost water for 4 days during the water crisis. #thanksapril
By contrast, February of 2024 was much warmer, nicer, and springlike, with more days above 60 than below 40.
Bad news this month kept us glued to our screens, and bad weather kept us inside. As a result of this, everyone has been in a collective funk, with bouts of cabin fever and lingering colds running rampant. Bad moods and bad actions gave us a slight uptick in criminal activity and more incidents of road rage in the region, according to preliminary crime data. (I almost got rear-ended and then nearly side-swiped by the unhinged driver of a green Kia Soul on Chamberlayne last Monday at 8:35 am. — email me if you saw this — I couldn’t get the plates as I was practicing my defensive driving skills in real time).
My advice to those suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or cabin fever, or month-long sniffles? Take a hike. Yes, I know that “take a hike” means essentially “go away,” but I mean it. Go away and get outside…even if it’s only a few miles from your house. Open the windows. Breathe the air. Open the front door and get out of the house.
The weather is improving, and there’s no sense in getting upset by things that are beyond your control. The best medicine is to get outside. Take a hike (or at the very least, take a long walk). Trust me. It’s just what the doctor ordered.
