“Toot your own horn because no one else will.”

My Mom told me once, “Toot your own horn because no one else will.” In other words, it’s okay to talk about your own accomplishments and brag a little.
It was good advice in life and in business. I talked my way into a pitching spot on my Little League team because I told the coach, “You know those other guys might throw harder, but I throw strikes.”
Never be ashamed to share your accomplishments and strengths. Embrace the things that put you in the best light and then tell the world. If you’re worried about someone else that thinks you’re bragging…don’t. They’re not going to be your champion anyway.
If you’re writing a resume or filling out your LinkedIn profile, it’s ok to “toot your own horn a little.” If you’re trying to win something – a job, a contest, a contract, or even an argument – let me know you’re really, really good.
I’m very proud of my son Jack who made the Dean’s List last semester at JMU. He did it with hard work, but he just missed the President’s List (All A’s, but because of one B+). He took my advice and spoke to his professor this semester. He detailed that 50% of the grade was based on a group project, but he led the project and worked harder than the others in the group. The professor was convinced and bumped the grade. Now we both get to brag a bit after he’s named to the President’s List.
Speaking of bragging a little bit, indulge me for a moment. The cool kids at Madison+Main accomplished something BIG this week: We earned eight Telly Awards. EIGHT. We won 4 for Holiday Barn, 3 for Virginia’s Office of The Attorney General and one for Realo Drugs. Check out the award-winning work below!
Bold Brands Win. Part of that means tooting your own horn.
