Three Kinds of People at Work
Regardless of what business you’re in, business basically boils down to solving problems. A customer has a need, and you provide them with a solution. If you own an apartment building, you solve a problem for someone who doesn’t have a place to live. If you own a restaurant, you feed people that are hungry. At Madison+Main, we solve clients’ marketing and PR challenges. Why? Because we are a team of creative problem solvers. That’s what we do.
It’s really kind of simple when you break it down. We are all in business to solve problems.
Teamwork makes the dream work, but if you take a good, hard look at who is on your team, you’ll probably be able to see that there are essentially three types of teammates:
1) Problem Solvers.
2) Problem Spotters
3) Problem Creators.
Problem Solvers are your team all-stars. They see things and immediately work to fix things. Keep them close, don’t let them go, and reward them.
Problem Spotters are players on the team, but not yet team players. You can call on them when needed, but they need more practice and training. Coach them up and turn them into problem solvers.
Problem Creators are the biggest problem. They’re not in the game. You know one when you spot one. They might be difficult. They might take credit for others’ work. They gossip and start rumors. You can never rehabilitate a problem creator and it’s best to let them leave…or ask them to leave. Remember the old adage, “A bad apple spoils the bunch.”
The ability to spot a problem is often very easy. The ability to solve a problem can be more difficult and usually requires effort — either mentally or physically (sometimes both). For some, problem-solving comes naturally. Others may need guidance and a process. Either way, it’s helpful to understand your team and what role they play. It’s the basis for a winning team. Agree or disagree? Always love hearing from you. Email me your thoughts.
And by the way, thanks for all the great feedback last week on outsourcing versus offshoring. 17 email replies from people in agreement and one who didn’t. We’re still friends. 🙂
MONDAY:
NEW WEBSITE REVEAL
We launched our client Red Pen Virtual Assistants’ new website on Monday. With a new and improved site, their online marketplace can better connect their team of skilled virtual assistants with businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals in need of help with freeing up their workloads and schedules. Just hours after “going live,” they got a new business lead. Check it out!
TUESDAY:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAITLIN!
On Tuesday, Copywriter Caitlin Sherman took the day off to celebrate her birthday. Even though she woke up to a less-than-stellar weather forecast, she didn’t let that rain on her parade as she took a trip around town. When telling the team about her favorite gift, she shared a personalized video from Kermit the Frog that her partner got her on Cameo singing her Happy Birthday. Little does she know, that was my original gift idea. I know she’s anxiously awaiting my rendition but until then, Happy Birthday, Caitlin!
WEDNESDAY:
“I’M JUST A BILL ON CAPITOL BILL”
On Wednesday, Delegate Wendell Walker, who represents parts of the City of Lynchburg, Bedford County, and Amherst County, introduced House Resolution No. 285 recognizing The Texas Inn with “an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the restaurant’s history of contributions to the Commonwealth.” For once, a bi-partisan bill that everyone can get behind.
THURSDAY:
WORKING ON WORKSHOP PLANS
On Thursday, Copywriter Caitlin Sherman and VCU Ad Club President Mariah Kumpe met to discuss an upcoming workshop Madison+Main will lead for VCU students. As a past VCU CreateAthon mentor, Caitlin recently saw an opportunity to impart copywriting tips and tricks to those who’d be participating in this year’s event, as well as students who want to brush up on their writing skills.
Also on Thursday, the Accounts Team met for lunch at Conejo in the Westhampton Commons at Patterson & Libbie. The ladies lunched and munched on classic Mexican cuisine as they met “live and in person” to reconnect with one another. Now, I’m hungry. #Thanks
FRIDAY:
HOLIDAY BARN BILLBOARDS
On Friday, some of the team met with our client Holiday Barn Pet Resorts to discuss the recent billboard designs we created for them. They wanted to highlight their grooming, training, boarding, daycare, and staycation services for pet parents. Overall, we’d say things went “paws”-itively amazing, and we’re all excited to see the designs off of our computers and out in the world. Keep an eye out for them!
