Reassessing Recessions

We’ve danced around the “R” word for about a year, but after two consecutive quarters of declining GDP, one has to ask, “Are we in a Recession?”
It depends on what source you cite and what news media you follow, but economists generally agree things are not looking good. If we are not in a recession now, we will be soon. So, what should we do? Here’s another “R” word for you; RISE.
At the now ripe, old age of 55, I have learned a few things. Recessions come around every 10 years or so, which means we’re overdue. But a recession isn’t the end of the world. It’s actually a great opportunity. Hear me out. If you RISE to the occasion.
- A Recession is a great time to START a business. Statistics show that there’s an increase in start-ups during economic slowdowns. In fact, some of the biggest and best brands out there were born in a recession, such as HP, Hyatt, Uber, Slack, Venmo, and Microsoft. Start-ups will RISE up.
Part of the reason is there’s nowhere to go but up.
- A recession is a great time to GROW a business. Many companies see the oncoming recession and will cut costs before it hits. Layoffs, budget freezes, expense reduction, etc. A large number of companies will then do the worst thing possible – deeply cut or eliminate marketing expenses. That’s like running a car on empty because you’re approaching a traffic jam. History is full of stories of brands that seized the day and upped their marketing spend and permanently relegated their competition to number two. Kellogg’s outspent C.W. Post during The Great Depression, and the rest was history. Coca-Cola has consistently outspent and out maneuvered Pepsi in the Cola Wars for over 100 years – through 10 recessions – and remained the number one Cola brand in the world.
I started Madison+Main before The Great Recession, and I followed my own advice (and so have most of our clients – not all). #BoldBrandsWin
MONDAY:
COLLABORATION AT CORE
On Monday, some of the Madison+Main-iacs met with our VCU clients for a CORE facilitation regarding the Massey Challenge. After a day of discussions and collaboration, our teams landed on some ideas for their brand attributes and statements, as well as audience profiles and insights to consider moving forward. All in a day’s work!
Monday was also National Seat Belt Day. Did you know that roughly 15 percent of Virginian drivers don’t buckle up before they drive? Our client DRIVE SMART Virginia educates drivers about the importance of safety belt use. So here’s a friendly reminder to click it…or face getting a ticket — or worse.
TUESDAY:
BIG NEWS
Did you hear the news? Our client Birmingham Green was voted as one of the Best Nursing Homes 2023 by Newsweek! Performance Data, Reputation, COVID-19, and Accreditation statuses were all taken into consideration when ranking nursing homes across Virginia. Congratulations on this honor!

WEDNESDAY:
CAPTAINING THE ACCOUNTS TEAM
We are proud to announce that Allison Nida has earned a promotion to Accounts Director at Madison+Main. A Christopher Newport University alum, Allison joined the firm in 2018 as an Account Executive and has steadily worked her way up the ranks thanks to her amazing work ethic and excellent client reputation building skills. Thanks, Allison, for all you do!

THURSDAY:
FRIENDSGIVING
On Thursday, we hosted our Friendsgiving at the office. Per Finance & Operations Manager Katie Rossberg’s wishes, our spread included turkey – a Thanksgiving necessity – and many other tasty treats courtesy of the Madison+Main-iacs. We gobbled up everything in sight and had a fantastic time. No doubt we’ll be stuffed until Turkey Day next week.

FRIDAY:
LIVING AT LUCY CORR
You may remember from last week’s Weekly Report, but our client Lucy Corr recently celebrated the re-election of their CEO Derrick Kendall as the Chairman of the Virginia Health Care Association and the Virginia Center for Assisted Living’s Board of Directors for a second term. Richmond Family Magazine shared an article from Derrick highlighting the social and health benefits of senior living communities. It’s a good read from a great guy.
