Don’t “Set It And Forget It!”
Everyone asked you, “So, do you have a Facebook page?” and you said, “Um, not yet.” You worked hard. Put in all the content. You press the button and go live with your business page. Congratulations. You’re on Facebook.
As a business owner, this can be awesome, but for most, the results are “meh.”
After begging a few friends and your mom, your Facebook follower count has risen to 137. The leads aren’t coming in. “Well, that was a giant waste of time,” you think to yourself.
So what went wrong?
- It isn’t a one-off project. Social media marketing is an ongoing process. Unlike a Ron Popeil Showtime Rotisserie Oven, you can’t just “set it and forget it.” You have to work on it every day — or at least a few times a week.
- Singularity of content. Most companies post content that makes them look like a one-trick pony. Your company has to post about more than ONE topic. And most of the content should be about your audience and what they’re interested in, not just posts about your company.
- Words alone won’t cut it. Written content by itself will not grow your audience and get results. You have to post photo content, video content, interactive content, and even an occasional meme or graphic that people want to like, comment on, and share.
- Not understanding the algorithms. Facebook and other social media platforms are free, and you get what you pay for. When you post something, only 10 percent of your followers will see it. (That means only 13 people saw your post if you have 137 followers.)
- Social isn’t a priority for your company. If growing your online presence isn’t a priority, then delete your page. There’s nothing worse than reading yesterday’s news. So if you haven’t posted anything since March 2020, you might want to hide your page. It just tells potential customers or job candidates that you’ve given up. If your Facebook page is a pre-pandemic time capsule, maybe it’s time to throw in the towel.
But if you’re serious about getting more out of your efforts, here are some quick tips:
You can increase your followers by:
- Posting at different times of the day.
- Reposting content a few days or a few weeks later.
- Asking questions of your followers.
- Boosting posts to reach the other 90 percent that didn’t see it “organically.”
- Inviting those who “like” your posts to follow your page.
- Calling us. We can help.
MONDAY:
A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER
Over the weekend, our clients Holiday Barn Pet Resorts and Compass Entertainment Complex celebrated special anniversaries. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Holiday Barn Pet Resorts and its commitment to providing quality care for furry friends. Thank you to the pack for hosting a great party that a few of our Madison+Main-iacs enjoyed attending.
Compass Entertainment Complex spent all of last week dishing out $2 deals in honor of its second anniversary. (Yep, they started in the middle of a global pandemic, but ROCKED it!) Their week-long celebration was full of families and friends having fun at their state-of-the-art entertainment complex. We’re excited about what the next year holds for them.
TUESDAY:
BIG DAY
On Tuesday, I sprinted over The Diamond for a press conference held by Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and other city big-wigs. The mayor announced that RVA Diamond Partners was selected as the development partner for the new Diamond District development, and we’re on the winning team. Lots of exciting news for us, but also the entire city. And on a personal note, I’m very, very happy for my buddy Todd “Parney” Parnell and his team at Richmond Flying Squirrels, who will be getting a new ballpark.
We also celebrated both Creative Director Art Webb’s and Senior Copywriter Derek Fair’s birthdays. Art spent the day with a couple of cows. No, seriously. His birthday was spent at a photoshoot in western Pennsylvania for our client Maola —proving once again that Art is a man on the mooo-ve. Derek opted to hang out at home with his furry friend, Dusty. Sounds like a pretty paw-some time to me. Happy Birthday, boys! Be sure to eat lots of cake and down it with a craft beer (or two).
WEDNESDAY:
GO OUT TO THE OUTDOOR EXPO
This October, our client Green Top is again hosting the Mid-Atlantic’s largest retail show for outdoor enthusiasts. What can you expect from the Green Top Outdoor Expo? 225+ vendors, product demonstrations, a DockDogs canine aquatics competition, live music and more will be set up and ready for the whole family to enjoy. Mark your calendars for October 1-2, and learn more about the event in the meantime.
THURSDAY:
MEETING WITH MOTLEYS
On Thursday, the team headed to our client Motleys Asset Disposition Group for their CORE facilitation. If you’re from Richmond, lived in Richmond, or have any connection to Richmond, you’ve probably heard of Motleys. They’re one of our newest clients, but they’ve been in auction biz for decades. They celebrated the 32nd anniversary of their Richmond Auto Auction Thursday night with a big concert featuring Spin Doctors and Mission BBQ. We’re so excited to get to work with them on their branding and marketing.
FRIDAY:
WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE?
Tomorrow, President and Chief Operating Officer Molly Whitfield will celebrate her 15th anniversary at Madison+Main. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with her over the last 15 years, it’s that she’s truly got a brain for business. As our fearless leader, she sets everyone up for success — both clients and our team alike. We’re so lucky to have her in our corner. Happy anniversary, Molly! #BoldBossesWin
