Bold Brands Win: You’re Hired – Part 1
(The following is the first of a four-part series on recruitment strategies and tactics recently used by Madison+Main for our clients. Over the last three months, Madison+Main has been supercharging recruitment campaigns. The results have been amazing. Hope you find it useful.)
In the last two years, we have seen an unprecedented labor crunch in the U.S. We went from an all-time high unemployment rate of 14.8% in April 2020, up from a historically low 3.5% in February of the same year. There are lots of reasons why; pandemic, workers staying home, inflation, stimulus money, and the lowest labor participation rates in history. It has affected every industry and every client of ours.
Luckily for you, we’re sharing some creative strategies and tactics we have used to help them achieve their recruitment goals. As we like to say Bold Brands Win….even when it comes to attracting and retaining workers.
Building a good team is vitally important, but it is now the biggest challenge any business faces. Indeed, the answer is not simply running ads on Indeed.
Richmond-based Trash Fairies, a doorstep-to-dumpster recycling and trash disposal service, has been on a skyrocketing growth path over the past nine years. The company hires independent contractors to provide concierge trash and recycling service for more than 53,000 units across 11 states — from Virginia to Texas to Florida. They have previously advertised part-time positions for their after-hours associates on job sites lndeed or their Facebook page. And it worked…for a while.
Madison+Main jumped in to help them in August of 2021. Shortly after we created a custom landing page and used highly-targeted Facebook Lead Form ads to generate more than 2,000 qualified leads for their hiring managers in just four months.
With such a small labor participation rate (only 60% of the workforce is working), we’ve seen the returns from more traditional recruiting tactics (online job boards like Indeed) decreasing.
Lesson: Advertising to a smaller and smaller number of unemployed people on a job board isn’t going to get you to your goals. For Trash Fairies, we targeted people on Facebook who were already working and more likely to take a part-time job, as a side hustle. It worked. #BoldBrandsWin
MONDAY:
PRINTING PROS
On Monday, we received some incredible new collateral for FLWR PWR thanks to Ric Withers and his team at Wythken Printing. A week before I opened Madison+Main’s doors, I went to Ric to get business cards printed. He’s been our partner from the beginning…actually three weeks before I got a business license. I called him this week to catch up and neither one of us could believe we’ve been working together for more than 16 years. Need something printed for your business? Need direct mail printing and fulfillment? Perhaps you want to print some “Help Wanted?” signs? Call Ric. Or visit their beautifully amazing website. (I’ll give you one guess who designed it.)
TUESDAY:
CAITLIN’S SHOW
On Tuesday the team learned a little bit more about our Jr. Copywriter Caitlin Sherman! Caitlin presented her Madison+Main-iac University class on Tuesday and told us all about her childhood, life at VCU, and songwriting career! (Madison+Main-iac University is an ongoing series of self-lectures, presented by staff for staff). She even played us the latest song she wrote about being 22 before she snagged her “dream gig” on our team. Great job, Caitlin. Now write a song called 54, from my perspective. What rhymes with words like “tired” and “achy?”
WEDNESDAY:
GOLF ANYONE?
On Wednesday, the team worked on a project for one of our Williamsburg clients — Two Rivers Country Club at Governor’s Land. We recently wrote a blog highlighting their 18-hole Tom Fazio-designed championship golf course. Did you know their course is rated as one of the Top 25 Golf Courses in Virginia? Maybe I need to leave Florida and head back home for a round…
THURSDAY:
#THROWBACK THURSDAY
January has been a busy month for many of the Madison+Main-iacs — with work, new clients, and several team members called up for Jury Duty. With many members of my team waiting to see if they’re working or sitting on a jury, I remembered that time Sr. Copywriter Derek Fair stepped in to write the Weekly Report when I got pressed into Jury Service. It’s one of my all-time favorites. Check it out.
FRIDAY:
CANNA-BIZ
This weekend, Communications Director Kent Jennings Brockwell will be attending the 2022 Virginia Cannabis Conference on Sunday for FLWRPWR. Presented by Virginia NORML at Delta Hotels Richmond Downtown, it’s the Commonwealth’s premier cannabis industry and policy event. Kent will be collecting industry insights for FLWRPWR that he can share with the whole team.
