Oh, Evergreen!

‘Tis the season of the Christmas tree — and evergreen content! Evergreen content is content that remains relevant for months and years after it has been published on a website. So why does your blog need some attention? Three words: search engine optimization.
The term “evergreen” sounds familiar even to the non-marketing ear because evergreen trees (usually the pine or fir variety) are often used to decorate homes at Christmas.
I always tell my kids, what you put on the Internet never leaves. It’s true. That’s why “evergreen” content can be so beneficial to your SEO. Most people do not realize these three things:
- The web is finite.
- The web is permanent.
- Google makes it all searchable.
- The web is finite.
- The web is permanent.
- Google makes it all searchable.
I feel bad for young kids these days. They get judged by what they posted as teenagers… by friends, family, and hiring managers. If the web was around in the ‘80s, there would be pics of me half-naked, drinking vodka out of a rugby cleat. Every time I speak to a class at VCU, I advise them, “Kids, do not make the mistakes I’ve made. Clean your digital dirt before you apply for a job after college.”
But what’s lousy for today’s impressionable youth may make some great digital impressions for your company. Post useful content that is evergreen – it fits any season – and it will permanently help your organic search results.
Below are some common evergreen formats you might consider to give your website or blog an upgrade in the new year.
- Lists (top ten lists, Best __ in RVA Lists, etc.)
- Top Tips (free advice — everybody wants it)
- Instructional “How To” Tutorials (especially with shorter, snackable videos)
- Encyclopedia-Esque Entries (Wikipedia is the king of SEO)
- Product Reviews (post your best customer feedback on your website)
- Videos (everything can be a video; products, services, customers, etc.)
May your 2022 be ever prosperous and evergreen.

WEDNESDAY:
QUESTION WEDNESDAY
On our favorite morning meeting of the week, the team got in the festive spirit with the question, “What was your most memorable holiday gift?” Two stories stood out the most — Erin Rebmann, Sr. Graphic Designer, had us oohing and awing over how her husband Rich popped the big question on Christmas day, and Communications Specialist Kennedy Heidel told us about her trip to Iceland for the holiday where she ate reindeer and puffin. Don’t worry — no one spoke to her for the rest of the day.
THURSDAY:
RARE RELEASE
On Thursday, the team got ready for A. Smith Bowman Distillery’s latest limited release: Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Whiskey Release 21 — Rum Finished Bourbon. This Saturday, the Distillery will be selling a very limited number of bottles (I hear there were only two barrels that were aged for 15 years). Making a trip to Fredericksburg? Get there early. Like 4 a.m. early. Seriously…

FRIDAY:
‘TIS THE SEASON FOR EVENTS

This one is produced by Marianne Kelley’s School of Dance in a Midlothian. Only $25 per person and it runs today through Sunday.
